The first number - protection against touch and intrusion of objects

• 0
  No special protection against involuntary or inadvertent contact with live or moving parts. No protection against intrusion of solid foreign objects.
• 1
  Protection from a large part of the body such as a hand (but no protection from deliberate access); from solid objects greater than 50 mm in diameter.
• 2
  Protection against fingers or other smaller objects (not greater than 12 mm in diameter).
• 4
  Protection against solid objects larger than 1mm (wires, nails, screws, larger insects and other potentially invasive small objects such as tools/small etc).

  Partial protection against dust that may harm equipment.
• 6
  Totally dust tight. Full protection against dust and other particulates

The second number - protection against water

• 0
  No protection.
• 1
  Vertically falling water droplets must not cause harmful effects.
• 2
  Water droplets falling within an angle of 15 degrees from the vertical must not cause harmful effects.
• 3
  Water splashing from above and at an angle of 60 degrees from the vertical must not cause harmful effects.
• 4
  Water splashes from all directionsmust not cause harmful effects.
• 5
  Water spouting of lowpressurefrom all directions must not cause harmful effects.
• 6
  Water from high seas must not enter the machine in harmful amounts.
• 7
  Water must not enter the machine in harmful amounts when it is fully immersed in water under a certain amount of pressure and for a limited time.
• 8
  Water must not enter the machine in harmful amounts when it isfully;immersedunder specified pressure and for an indefinite period of time.
